Washington reports progress in Cairo talks on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

The White House confirmed that the Director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) William Burns and senior officer Brett McGurk were participating in the talks, which began on Thursday night.

US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said progress had been made in initial talks and that the two sides should now come together.

“The first discussions we had in Cairo last night were constructive in nature. So we want the same momentum to continue in the next couple of days,” he said.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken visited the Middle East this week and announced that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supports a US-backed proposal to ease tensions in the Gaza Strip, which now requires Hamas approval.

Kirby said the US still sees Netanyahu as accepting the proposal, even though Netanyahu has called for Israeli troops to be kept on the Gaza Strip and the Egyptian border, opposing both. Washington and Cairo.

Kirby reiterated his call for Hamas to accept the proposal outlined last week in talks in the Qatari capital, Doha.
