“This new funding will enable our humanitarian partners to continue saving lives and providing assistance to affected communities on both sides of the border in Myanmar and Bangladesh,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said.
He pointed out that this new aid brings the total humanitarian assistance the United States has provided to the Rohingya since August 2017 to $2.1 billion.
An estimated one million Rohingya live in overcrowded camps in Bangladesh after fleeing persecution in Burma against this Muslim community, sparking one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
These refugees live in precarious conditions and depend on international aid.
The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) recently announced a reduction in food rations in March due to a lack of funding.
