The New York Times reported that Washington tried to prevent Kiev from launching an attack on Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, aiming to assassinate him.
Attempted murder
The newspaper said, citing US officials, that the US administration was the first to find out that Gerasimov was planning to visit the front lines of its forces in Ukraine, but the US did not pass this information to Ukraine,” for fear that the attempt on his life would lead to a war between the United States and Russia”.
He added that after Kiev learned the news of the visit, US officials tried in vain to persuade Ukraine to cancel the attack, as Ukraine went ahead with the implementation of its plan, but Gerasimov was unharmed.
Surprise visit to the Russian Defense Minister
Interestingly, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported on Sunday that Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had visited Russia’s Southern Military District to inspect the work of forces in the special operations area.
The ministry said in a statement that “Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu paid a working visit to the Southern Military District and inspected gatherings of forces in special military operation areas.”
He added that Shoigu, at the command center, listened to commanders’ reports on the situation and actions of Russian forces in the areas of operations.

In the context of operations on Ukrainian soil, the official spokesman of the Russian presidency, Dmitry Peskov, said that Russian President Vladimir Putin was briefed on the work of the joint headquarters of the Russian military branches participating in the special operation in Ukraine and held separate meetings with leaders.
