Over 250,000 readers of its digital or paper edition Washington Post decided to cancel their subscription after its owner, tycoon Jeff Bezos, announced that the newspaper would not choose to endorse either Democratic candidate Kamala Harris or her Republican opponent Donald Trump ahead of next Tuesday’s presidential election, according to the information of another US media outlet.
A National Public Radio (NPR) reporter reported via X yesterday that this is roughly 10% of the paper’s subscribers.
The decision angered the newspaper’s readership as it was seen as an attempt by Mr. Bezos to limit the potential damage to his interests and businesses should Mr. Trump return to the White House.
In an article published yesterday in his newspaper, the tycoon who also owns the digital retail giant Amazon and the private space company Blue Origin – which is crucially dependent on public contracts – among other things, assured that he has “no political agenda ” and argued that Americans believe the media is “biased” and choosing a candidate would not help restore their image of impartiality.
The text in which the newspaper’s editors announced that they were in favor of the vice president and the Democratic candidate for the White House had been written, but Jeff Bezos decided not to publish it.
The billionaire acquired the historic American newspaper in 2013.
The Post, which exposed much of the Watergate scandal in the 1970s that forced former Republican President Richard Nixon to resign in 1974, campaigned for Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden in 2016 and 2020, respectively.
