(CNN) – The US State Department confirmed on Tuesday that an American citizen named Carly Morris is detained in Saudi Arabia, but has not said whether an American person has so far been able to interview her.
“Our embassy in Riyadh is very involved in this issue and they are monitoring the situation closely,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said at a news conference.
CNN in Arabic has contacted Saudi authorities for unanswered comment at the time of writing this report.
“We are aware of reports that Ms. Morris has been detained and, of course, the safety of US citizens overseas is our top priority at the State Department,” the spokesperson added.
He continued: “We take our part very seriously in assisting US citizens overseas, when someone is detained overseas, we seek immediate access to visit the person to assist them with all appropriate consular assistance and our embassy. in Riyadh is highly committed to this issue.
