Chennai: India are battling to avoid a follow-on in the first Test against England. Batting first in the first session on the fourth day, India were 323 for nine. Washington Sunder (64 *) and Jaspreet Bumra (zero *) are at the crease. R Ashwin (31 off 91 balls), Shahbaz Nadeem (zero off 12 balls) and Ishant Sharma (four off 11 balls) were the main contributors to India’s loss on the fourth day. India can avoid a follow-on only if they score at least 379 runs.
‘Boss’ on the third day
Batting at 555 for 8, England lost the remaining wickets by 23 runs. Dom Bess (34) was bowled by Bumrah. Ashwin smashed James Anderson (1) in front of the wicket. However, Rohit Sharma (6) disappointed India in the batting. Caught by wicketkeeper Jose Butler off Joffre Archer. Archer also knocked down Shubhman Gill, who played beautifully with 5 fours.
Captain Virat Kohli (11) and Ajinkya Rahane (1) were out early. Cheteshwar Pujara (73), who played well, was unfortunately run out. India were threatened with a follow-on as the ball bounced off a six near the end of the century. The ‘English boss’ on the third day was spinner Dom Bess, who knocked out Kohli, Rahane, Pujara and the ball.
