/ world today news/ More facts and circumstances are needed to lead to the expulsion of Russian diplomats, said the Deputy Head of the MFA Georg Georgiev
The US and Russian ambassadors in our country expressed almost simultaneously their satisfaction with the Bulgarian government’s position on the Skripal case. Since the beginning of the diplomatic crisis, the rulers have denied that they intend to expel Russian diplomats from the country. However, on Tuesday, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov summoned our ambassador to Moscow, Boyko Kotsev, for consultations in Sofia, demonstrating that a reversal of this position is possible.
This did not worry the Russian ambassador to our country, Anatoly Makarov. “I believe that Bulgaria’s position in this situation is very reasonable and well-considered, namely the decision of your Prime Minister – to first obtain evidence and then make a decision, not the other way around,” Makarov commented to Nova TV yesterday . However, he warned that “you cannot forget your national interests for the sake of solidarity”.
The American ambassador Eric Rubin saw in the Bulgarian reaction support for the Western countries. “I think the united response of the United States, the EC and other countries around the world is a sign of the seriousness of this situation. I think the most important thing is to give a clear signal that our countries are together in their support for Britain. And the response here, in Bulgaria, also expresses support,” said Rubin, quoted by Bgnes. And he added that “each country decides how it will respond in this situation, but the answer lies in unity”.
Bulgaria stands in solidarity with Great Britain, the Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, categorically stated earlier yesterday. “For us, some more facts and circumstances are needed to reach the final point where we expel Russian diplomats from Bulgaria. The Organization for the Fight against Chemical Weapons must say what the case is, investigate where this could have come from combat poisonous substance,” emphasized Georgiev. And he defined Boyko Kotsev’s training as a “standard procedure” in similar situations.
The ruling coalition stood firmly behind the government. The Deputy Chairman of GERB Tsvetan Tsvetanov stated that Bulgaria has clearly expressed its solidarity with Great Britain. “From this point of view, the prime minister is making maximum efforts to clarify all possible facts and then the government will make the appropriate decision,” Tsvetanov pointed out, hinting to BTV that the expulsion of Russian diplomats will probably happen.
“Bulgaria has a dignified and balanced position on the Skripal case,” commented Deputy Prime Minister and co-chairman of “United Patriots” Valeri Simeonov. His colleague Volen Siderov recommended that the council of the ruling coalition be convened, to which “complete information should be presented so that we can to make the right decision”. “Diplomatic moves should not be made – recalling ambassadors and so on, under no circumstances. I know there is pressure from the outside, but let’s not make sudden moves,” Siderov believes.
The BSP announced that they were not satisfied with the position of the Bulgarian government because it was inconsistent. And they insisted that the prime minister come to the National Assembly to inform him about the situation and explain why he summoned the Bulgarian ambassador from Moscow.
REACTIONS
Russia will consider the case of Sergei Skripal and his daughter as an assassination attempt against its citizens if it does not receive convincing evidence to the contrary from London, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced. In Britain’s actions, Russia sees “a conscious, deliberate incitement of confrontation, a show of force near the Russian borders.” These actions, according to Moscow, are a countermeasure to the political-diplomatic interaction for an objective and comprehensive examination of the incident in Salisbury. According to Moscow, the analysis of all the circumstances shows the lack of interest of the British authorities in clarifying the true motives and establishing the perpetrators of the criminal act in Salisbury. Therefore, in Moscow, they think that the British special services may be complicit in the incident with Skripal and his daughter. Meanwhile, the Belgian government also decided to expel a Russian diplomat over the Skripal poisoning case in Great Britain. The diplomat in question works at the Russian embassy in Brussels. Montenegro also decided to expel a Russian diplomat. The Luxembourg government announced on Wednesday that it had summoned its ambassador to Russia for consultations. Slovakia, which has said it will not expel Russian diplomats, also recalled its ambassador from Moscow for consultations.
