Was scientist Nikola Tesla a Croat or a Serb? Euro coins spark discussion between Balkan countries

Was Nikola Tesla now a Serb or a Croat? The answer is not so black and white. The scientist was born in 1856 in the village of Smiljan, then still part of Austria-Hungary. Today that region is located in present-day Croatia. Tesla was the child of Serbian parents. He therefore has ties to both countries, although he hardly spent any time in Serbia during his life.

In addition, Tesla moved to the United States at the age of 28, where he also took American nationality. He died in 1943 in New York City, but his ashes are preserved in Serbia.

Tesla itself might be confused by the hoopla. “I am as proud of my Serbian heritage as I am of my Croatian homeland,” the inventor wrote in 1936.
