An entire village in Germany needs to be reclaimed to dredge lignite. Climate activists have taken the place.
The police want to start clearing the village from Wednesday. The reason: the energy company RWE wants to extract the coal that lies beneath the site. RWE now owns the settlement. In order for the construction work to begin, the village, which has been abandoned by the residents, has to be completely demolished.
Climate activists protest in Lützerath
RWE and the North Rhine-Westphalia police drew up the plan without the climate activists. They holed up in the village to protest against coal mining and excavation. So far they have sat in blocks, building tree houses, barricading themselves in houses and climbing wooden structures several meters high. This is intended to make the work of the police more difficult.
Lützerath: Nobody can be there
On Monday, the Higher Administrative Court upheld the stay and entry ban in Lützerath for the first time. How come? The RWE company wants to protect its “private rights” – it is its property. The post is required for energy supply, according to RWE. The police will remove the barricades in the area on Tuesday – this should probably not be the start of the evacuation, writes the Aachen police on Twitter.
