This was Cristiano Ronaldo’s last Portuguese national team shirt at the World Cup? The superstar has now told fans about her on Instagram in heartwarming words.
It’s over for Cristiano Ronaldo (37) at the World Cup in Qatar. In a dramatic quarter-final of the World Cup, he and his Portuguese lost 1-0 to the Moroccan mentality monsters. The superstar has now taken to Instagram for the first time since the World Cup.
“Winning a World Cup for Portugal has been the biggest and most ambitious dream of my career,” the 37-year-old wrote on Instagram in his first public reaction to Sunday’s 1-0 defeat by Morocco. “Unfortunately the dream ended yesterday.” After the World Cup, the captain left the field in tears and was initially silent.
World Cup: Cristiano Ronaldo speaks for the first time on Instagram
Ronaldo had played his fifth World Cup in Qatar. The superstar, currently without a club, probably no longer believes in another attempt to win the title in 2026 at the age of 41. “Luckily I have won many international titles, including for Portugal, but representing our country’s name on top of the world was my biggest dream,” she wrote. “I fought for this. I fought hard for this dream.”
He “gave everything” for this desire, wrote the striker, who scored a total of eight World Cup goals for Portugal, one of them in Qatar. In particular, the 196-time international player and world record holder did not comment on his future in the national team.
“There’s not much more to say right now,” he wrote. He hopes that time will be a good guide that allows everyone to “draw their own conclusions”.
Here is Cristiano Ronaldo’s Instagram post:
The five-time world footballer was only used as a wildcard in Portugal’s two knockout matches in Qatar. There had been numerous debates about his demotion. Among other things, it was reported that Ronaldo threatened to leave Qatar.
“I’ve always been someone who fought for everyone to score and I would never turn my back on my teammates and my country,” wrote Ronaldo. Much has been written and speculated. “But my commitment to Portugal hasn’t changed for a second.”
The future of the superstar, however, raises many questions. After Manchester United and Ronaldo agreed to part ways, there was a heated rumor from Saudi Arabia. According to this there would seem to be an offer of 225 million euros, but at the moment it is not clear whether the Portuguese will accept. (dpa, fr)
