Infinity Ward has added support for 120fps in Call of Duty: Warzone on Xbox Series X. This was not mentioned in the latest update notes Modern Warfareposted this week on social media, but was spotted by gamers testing the battle royale on Microsoft’s new console.
The Microsoft Store is now in the description and Warzoneand Modern Warfare 120 fps support is mentioned. Initial testing by Digital Foundry specialists confirmed that Warzone is now targeting 120fps on the Xbox Series X, but mostly frame rates range from 100 to 120fps. Here is one of the screenshots from the Xbox Series X:
That being said, Digital Foundry testing on the PlayStation 5 also confirms that Warzone is still capped at 60fps. Experts have tried many methods and verified three times that Warzone on PS5 runs at 60fps. The PS5 has quality and performance modes to choose from in the user interface, but even in performance mode, Warzone runs with the same limitation.
Neither Activision nor Infinity Ward commented on the situation (although Eurogamer journalists asked them this question). For now, one can only guess at the reasons for this move – after all, Bungie this week released an update to support 120 fps in Destiny 2 on both next-gen consoles. Perhaps this is due to the lower performance of the new Sony console, however, it is more likely a matter of backward compatibility: while Warzone is working on PS5 as a game for PS4, apparently 120 fps will require a full update for the next generation system.
It is worth noting that Activision released on Friday the next game in the Call of Duty series – Black Ops Cold War from Treyarch. Perhaps the company doesn’t want to distract attention from the new project. It’s also worth noting that Activision has continued its Call of Duty partnership with Sony, offering temporary Black Ops Cold War exclusives to PlayStation owners.
