“We have good news. An agreement was reached after Italian pressure, according to which Operation Shields could escort and protect the Greek oil tanker that was hit by the Houthis in order to avoid an ecological disaster,” Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said from Brussels.
The head of the Italian diplomacy made statements to journalists of his country, after his meeting with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and with the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Mezzola.

“I believe they will go to Djibouti, while Saudi Arabia is going to offer, it seems, a tug. The weather conditions are improving and it is an operation with a substantial environmental character, thanks to international cooperation, with a strong Italian presence”, Tajani added.
“Operation Shields, which has always aimed to defend freedom of navigation and connections made by commercial ships, in this phase also guarantees freedom from marine pollution. This is a positive agreement, which proves how much can be done when an emergency situation arises”, concluded the Italian Foreign Minister.
