Warsaw. Contamination with hydrochloric acid at the Siekierki Combined Heat and Power Plant

The soil was contaminated with hydrochloric acid at the fence of the Siekierki Heat and Power Plant. Firefighters took care of neutralizing the dangerous substance. The matter will be investigated by the environmental inspection.

Around 2.50, the firefighters received a report regarding the irritating smell in the area of ​​Kobylańska and Łucznicza. – Eight fire brigades were sent to the site, including a chemical and ecological rescue group. Samples were taken, and after examining them, it turned out that the irritating substance was hydrochloric acid, informs Jacek Zakrzewski from the Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service.

– The contamination occurred on the soil, about a meter from the fence of the heat and power plant. In the air, at a height of about four meters, there were also vapors that were sensed by the security staff who reported this incident to us, Zakrzewski reports. As he adds, firefighters notified the police, the Provincial Inspectorate for Environmental Protection and the city’s Office for Security and Crisis Management.

Irritating smell

– We are trying to neutralize the acid and neutralize the contamination. We are also waiting for the arrival of the VIEP inspector – emphasizes Zakrzewski. The firefighter states that the causes of the contamination are not yet known.

As described by the tvnwarszawa.pl reporter, there is still one fire brigade at the scene. – There are three sealed containers next to the fence. Around them, the soil is sprinkled with lime. You can also see that it was combed for sampling. There is still a slightly irritating smell in the air – says Zieliński.
