Later this month, the prosecutor’s office will request to waive the immunity of MP Adam Szłapka in order to charge him with causing an accident – reports “Rzeczpospolita”.
The head of Nowoczesna, and current minister for European Union affairs, hit a 16-year-old cyclist with his car at a bicycle crossing in Saska Kępa in Warsaw a year ago. We wrote about the incident on tvnwarszawa.pl. The victim suffered a head injury and a broken nasal bone. The insults caused health problems for a period longer than seven days, which is why investigators classified the incidents as a crime, not a misdemeanor.
Prosecutor Norbert Woliński, spokesman for the Warsaw Praga District Prosecutor’s Office, announced that “an application to waive immunity with respect to criminal liability for causing a qualified offense under Article 177 §1 of the Penal Code will be submitted this month.” This provision provides for a penalty of up to three years in prison.
– I will waive my immunity as soon as the matter reaches the Sejm. Unfortunately, this cannot be done earlier due to formal reasons, Minister Adam Szłapka told “Rzeczpospolita”. He has declared this before.
“He stated that he was an employee of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland”
As the prosecutor’s office previously reported, on June 15, 2023, the politician appeared for questioning at the Warsaw VII District Police Headquarters. “When receiving personal data, the interrogated Adam Szłapka stated that he was an employee of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland and only after questions clarifying the nature of his employment, he stated that he was a member of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. Due to the immunity that protects the MP, no further actions were taken and the case was transferred to the prosecutor’s office,” it explained. .
In an interview with tvnwarszawa.pl, Szłapka assured that after the accident he provided help to the injured person, notified the services and was “in constant contact with the family.” He described the interrogation as follows: – After verifying my identity, I was asked about my place of work. I replied: Sejm of the Republic of Poland. The next question was about profession. I said: MP. I did not hide the fact that I was an MP and immediately indicated that I would waive my immunity.
As “Rzeczpospolita” recalled, the Sejm must consent to bringing charges against a deputy by waiving immunity by an absolute majority of the statutory number of deputies.
