Warren Buffett Divests Almost All TSMC Stocks – What’s Behind It?

Jakarta

Warren Buffettone of the richest people in the world, divested of almost all stocks TSMC hers, just a few months after she bought it. I wonder why?

The CEO of Berkshire Hathaway is buying up TSMC shares in 2022, with an amount reaching USD 4.1 billion. but now, Berkshire Hathaway is selling around 85% of that stake in February 2023.

According to Nikkei Asia, Buffett, who is currently in Japan, admits that he is very proud of Berkshire Hathaway’s investment in Japanese companies, as quoted detikINET from Apple Insider, Sunday (16/4/2023).

As for TSMC, which originates from Taiwan, Buffett calls it a very well-managed company. However, he feels that Berkshire Hathaway needs to let go of the ownership of the TSMC shares because of the increasing geopolitical tensions.

Why is TSMC’s stock split interesting? This is because it is different from Buffett’s habit of managing his shares. He usually invests for a long time, for example he and Berkshire Hathaway kept Apple stock for a very long time.

As for TSMC shares, he owned them for several months before they were finally sold again.

Previously it was reported, TSMC plans to recruit more than 6,000 new employees during 2023. The step of the world’s largest chip maker is quite unique, considering that the global chip industry is currently in decline. Plus, many technology companies are carrying out massive layoffs because of their weak business.

TSMC also previously announced that their capital expenditure (capital expenditure) would be reduced for 2023. They also believe there will be a decrease in revenue in the first quarter. However, they believe that conditions will improve in the second half of 2023.

However, it seems that TSMC’s position is relatively safe because it is helped by their top consumers like Apple, who always order the latest chips to be used on iPhones, iPads or Macs. The most recent chip is indeed TSMC’s advantage compared to other chip manufacturers.

For vacancies of 6,000 employees for 2023, TSMC is looking for young engineers with various degrees, from D3 to S3, in electrical engineering or various fields of study related to software. Recruitment is focused on various cities in Taiwan.
