Warns against cost shock – how to get the cheapest rental car on holiday

You may be tired and tired after a long journey when you turn to a rental company in the hope of a free, good rental car at the best possible price.

It can be easier said than done, according to Arne Voll, communications manager at Gjensidige.

– In some cases, the rental car will be just as expensive, if not more expensive, than the plane ticket. Some rental companies know the degrees to take advantage of when happy holidaymakers turn to them, says Voll.

Voll points to the corona and fewer available cars as part of the reason for the rising prices.

– Pandemics and unrest in the world have led to tough times for the tourism industry in many countries. Both flights to the south, holiday homes and not least rental cars create a cost shock for many, he says.

Avoid buying pressure

A rental car in Spain, Greece or Italy quickly costs more than 10,000 kroner for two weeks. If you need to bring various extra insurances, you can add up to several thousand kroner, says Voll.

– If you go via Finn.no and other search engines, you can find prices well below this, but then it includes the most affordable insurance without additional coverage. Even with the purchase of “additional products” by external players, you are forced to take out insurance you have never heard of, says Voll.

He adds that if you find a cheap rental car through an external search engine, the price can quickly double before you have the keys in hand.

Ten tips for you who are going to rent a car

  • Book a rental car before you travel and decide which insurances you want.
  • If you are more than one driver, extra insurance must be taken out.
  • Use independent websites to form a picture of the rental company. (Trustpilot.no and more).
  • Take photo and video of the car outside and inside. Swipe across the car with your mobile and take the surroundings around so they can see where and when the video was taken.
  • Always remember to bring your driver’s license, credit card and passport.
  • Check that the mileage and the correct time are noted in the contract both when handing in and handing in.
  • Examine which countries / states the contract allows you to drive to, before crossing borders.
  • Check which rules apply to fuel, so you do not risk a large additional cost.
  • If you are a member of an organization, in some cases you have access to good discount agreements.
  • Get thoroughly acquainted with the contract and what the price includes, and you will avoid surprises afterwards.

– Normally, it holds with statutory liability insurance and an insurance that covers damage to one’s own and others’ vehicles.

– If they threaten with a high deductible by accident, most travel insurances cover this. Decide before you go to the counter about which insurance you should have. Prepare for a lot of pressure, but thank you nicely, no, no and again no, says Voll.

– Completely unnecessary

IF Andreas Handeland’s communications director’s stable tip is to drop the deductible insurance with the car rental company.

– Many rental companies tempt with a deductible insurance so that you do not have to pay a high deductible if something should happen. It is completely unnecessary because most travel insurances cover this anyway, says Handeland.

Handeland mentions that you do well to check your own travel insurance to make sure what it covers.

– It is also very important to check the car and take thorough photos before you start driving. This way you avoid having to pay for damage you have not caused to the car, says Handeland.
