WARNING SIGNS When should I take my child to the doctor? | SM Day News Information

Children’s hospitals and outpatient clinics are increasingly crowded during this time, among the many viral diseases that affect children. Influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and Covid-19 infections are just some of the conditions that cause overcrowding in healthcare facilities. It is a question that worries many parents: when is it time to take a child to the doctor?

According to Dr. Volker Strenger, a pediatric specialist at Med University Graz, the warning signs vary depending on the child’s age. Babies are more vulnerable to RSV, which can cause bronchiolitis – severe inflammation of the small airways.

Cough and fever: when to ask for help?

This can lead to breathing problems that sometimes require intensive care. Although bronchiolitis can be serious, the prognosis is usually positive if treatment is given in time. Common symptoms such as cough and fever are common in respiratory infections. However, some symptoms indicate the need for medical consultation:

If the child’s fever is higher than 39 degrees and does not respond to antipyretic drugs, you must contact a doctor. Difficulty breathing, rapid breathing or unusual breathing sounds are warning signs that should not be ignored. In the case of babies, one of the first signs of danger is the refusal to drink liquids.

Severe symptoms of breathing problems

It is important not to go directly to an outpatient clinic or hospital emergency room, as overcrowding can increase wait times. Instead, your pediatrician or family doctor can do an initial assessment, even over the phone.

Another worrying sign is when children have to use their abdominal muscles to exhale. This symptom indicates increased respiratory effort and should be checked by a doctor. Also, breathing sounds or “pulling” when breathing are other signs of serious breathing problems.

Prevention through vaccination and hygiene

Dr. Strenger strongly recommends the flu shot as a preventative measure against the flu virus. The vaccine is free for children up to 15 years of age and is given as a nasal spray for those between 2 and 15 years of age. Although the flu season lasts until February or March, the vaccine can provide effective protection about two weeks after administration.

In addition to vaccination, it is essential to avoid crowds and good hand hygiene, especially for babies. Following these steps can help prevent infections and reduce the risk of serious complications.

Common symptoms such as cough and fever should not always cause panic, but parents should be aware of warning signs, especially breathing problems and refusal to drink fluids. Vaccination, hygiene and preventive medical consultation are the main measures to protect children’s health during the disease season.
