Scientists found platelet precursor cells in the blood cells of severe COVID-19 sufferers.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Researchers at various German universities have identified two types of cells in the blood that explain the problem of blood clotting in Covid-19. With that the possibility of severe symptoms of the disease can be recognized earlier.
Until now, the impact of the SARS-CoV2 corona virus attack on each individual is still a mystery. Because, many are infected, but only show mild symptoms. While in part Covid-19 patients for others, the symptoms were very severe.
In Covid-19 patients with very severe symptoms of the disease, inflammatory reactions often appear that mistakenly attack the body’s organs. The lungs become inflamed, sometimes the heart or kidneys become inflamed.
Often there is damage to the fine blood vessels that triggers blood clots, which can form embolism in the lungs. This is the most common cause of death for Covid-19 patients with severe illness symptoms.
There are cell biomarkers that are typical for severe symptoms
A team of researchers from universities and research institutes in the German state of Schleswig Holstein as well as Dutch scientists, managed to find a determining indicator in the blood of Covid-19 patients. This indicator may provide early warning of serious illness symptoms.
German researchers from the foundation “Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation Cluster of Excellence – PMI” discovered platelet precursor cells in blood cells that play an important role in blood clotting. They found these cells in blood samples of Covid-19 patients with severe pain symptoms.
Cell called megakaryocytes that is, normally found in the spinal cord. Under certain conditions will mature into red blood cells. But these immature red blood cells are also found in the blood of patients in cases of blood poisoning or sepsis.
“We have found cases of immature platelet cells in the blood, in patients who are seriously ill from bacterial blood poisoning. This is an indication that these immature platelets are triggering a dangerous blood clotting problem,” said Florian Tran of the Institute for Molecular Biology. clinician of the University of Kiel, Germany who is the lead author of the research.
The number of immature red blood cells, also indicates a lack of oxygen. This is an emergency body reaction in cases of severe lung disease. Therefore, red blood cells, especially erythrocytes, are usually responsible for oxygen transport in the body.
Recognizing symptoms of serious illness early
“Together with other data, such as clinical data from the laboratory and measurements of inflammatory messenger elements, scientists can create a kind of fingerprint of cells undergoing this change in function and monitor it over time,” said Dr. Neha Mishra who also became the first author of the scientific report.
Through molecular fingerprints in the blood, the possibility of developing severe disease symptoms can be recognized earlier. With that, emergency services can also be prepared and adjusted to the course of the disease.
The results of a joint research by experts from various universities in Germany and the Netherlands and research centers in Germany were recently published in a scientific journal Immunity.
