The spread of Imbox remained confined for years to many countries in West and Central Africa, until outbreak hotspots began to appear with its transmission to humans from infected animals.
The World Health Organization stated that all but four of the 26 provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported infections, “with new infections emerging in geographic areas that had not previously reported the presence of Ambox, including Kinshasa, Lualaba, and South Kivu.”

The first symptoms of infection are fever, headache, muscle pain, and back pain in the first five days, and later a skin rash appears on the face, palms, and feet, followed by blisters, painful spots, and finally peeling.
The patient usually recovers on his own after two to four weeks.
The disease is more dangerous for children, pregnant women, and people with weak immune systems.
The World Health Organization says a total of 91,788 infections and 167 deaths were reported in 116 countries and territories from January 2022 to October 31 of this year.
