North Korea (North Korea) claims to have launched intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Hwasong-17 on Thursday (16/3) local time. The ICBM launch was carried out in an exercise to demonstrate a ‘tough response posture’ to joint military exercises United States of America (USA) and South Korea (Carousel).
As reported ReutersFriday (17/3/2023), a number of photos released by North Korean state media on Friday (17/3) local time show Kim Jong Un supervised the launch with her daughter along.
North Korean state media also released photos from space allegedly taken by the camera attached to the ICBM missile.
North Korea launched the ICBM missile into the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan on Thursday (16/3) local time, or several hours before the South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol visited Tokyo for a meeting with the Prime Minister (PM) Fumio Kishida to discuss ways to counter the North Korean threat.
“The strategic weapons training exercises serve as an opportunity to give a stronger warning to adversaries who are deliberately escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula while continuously making irresponsible and reckless military threats,” the North’s official Korean Central News Agency said. North Korea’s ballistic missiles are banned under a United Nations Security Council resolution and such launches have sparked condemnation from the US, South Korea and Japan.
The missile launch on Thursday (16/3) local time was Pyongyang’s third launch in the last five days.
