In future peace negotiations, Ukraine should not cede its territories to Russia, former United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said in an interview broadcast last night on German public television ZDF:
“The Ukrainian president has always said that he will not negotiate for the cession of any territories, so negotiations can only be held for the liberation of the territories occupied by Russia.”
Two months ago, Kissinger stirred up spirits in Kyiv after declaring before the World Economic Forum in Davos that the Ukrainians must accept the loss of Crimea and negotiate peace with Vladimir Putin as soon as possible, because otherwise there will be catastrophic consequences for the stability of Europe in long term.
Speaking to ZDF last night, the 99-year-old Kissinger assured that the current geopolitical crisis is far more dangerous than the Cold War and stressed that “only unity can help us overcome the difficulties that arise from the policy against Russia.”
Kissinger responded to a question about whether he thought Putin would use nuclear weapons: “Whether he would use nuclear weapons – certainly that is a red line, certainly the West has deterrence, but it must be prepared to act as firmly and decisively as possible.”
