Warning from the POLICE – Another scam via messenger service – Rhönkanal

On Thursday (July 28), unknown persons contacted a woman from the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district via the WhatsApp messenger service and pretended to be her son.

Through skillful action and under the pretense of being in an urgent emergency situation, the fraudsters made the lady pay a four-digit amount to an unknown account.

Only a short time later there was telephone contact with the actual son of the Hersfeld-Rotenburg woman under the number she had known before, whereupon she recognized the fraud and informed the police.

Your police therefore urgently warns:

– Never hand over or transfer money or valuables to persons or accounts unknown to you!

– Be suspicious if someone does not introduce themselves by name on the phone or via messenger services or pretends to be an acquaintance/relative, bank employee or police officer or person from the judiciary whom you do not recognize as such!

– Do not automatically save supposedly “new” phone numbers from contacts. First try to contact the people on the “old” phone numbers you know!

– Just hang up the phone and cut social media contacts as soon as your interlocutor asks you for money!

– When supposed contacts ask you for a favor, e.g. B. for money or other financial benefits, verify their identity by asking for a voice message.

– Call your relatives on the number you know or the police on 110!

Trick fraud is multifaceted!

The perpetrators adapt their approach to the fears of the potential victims, thereby affecting their highly personal area of life. Consequences such as withdrawal from society and a sense of shame offer con artists a platform.

Speak openly about what happened, anyone can become a victim. Well-informed people are not so easily unsettled and can correctly assess the corresponding situations.

Do not be afraid to inform the police if you suspect fraud. Information on the scam can be found on the website www.senioren-sind-auf-zack.de
