The Egyptian Medicines Authority warned of the spread of false information regarding how “freezing insulin” maintains its effectiveness, stressing that this information is incorrect.
The Authority explained in an awareness publication that insulin should be stored in the refrigerator at a temperature of (2-8) degrees Celsius, stressing that insulin should not be exposed to freezing, heat, or direct light because it affects its effectiveness.
The Egyptian Medicines Authority explained how to store the insulin pen in a number of ways
-The pen is not stored with the needle attached.
-You must follow the storage instructions on the label or package leaflet that came with the insulin.
-Unopened pens can be stored in the refrigerator until ready to use.
-The insulin pen should be stored in a cool, dry place.
– The insulin pen should not be left in direct sunlight.
Pens that have been frozen or exposed to temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius must be discarded.
-If traveling, the pen should be kept in a cool box.
