Warning: COVID’s summer wave is coming

Cases of coronavirus infection in Germany have more than doubled in the last week, and Health Minister Karl Lauterbach warned that a summer wave of infection is imminent, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The Robert Koch National Institutes of Health reported an average of 447.3 per 100,000 cases in seven days, up from 199.9 per 100,000 in the previous seven days.

“Voluntary wearing of masks indoors and a fourth dose of the vaccine are the best antidotes,” the German health minister wrote on Twitter.

The fourth dose of the vaccine is recommended in Germany only for people over the age of 70, for staff in healthcare facilities and for people with weak immune systems.

One of the reasons for the rapid increase in the number of patients may be due to the spread of the BA.5 mutation of the Omicron variant. For now, however, experts in Germany do not expect this to lead to difficulties in the health system.

At this stage of the pandemic, especially after the appearance of Omicron, it is believed that the prevalence of the infection does not fully correspond to the general infectious situation. For some time now, experts have suggested that there are a large number of cases that have not been registered by the health institute, mainly because the disease can be mild and not all infected people undergo an officially recognized peer test.
