Warning: Beware of Triangle Fraud in Used Car Sales – Jakarta CEO Shares Important Tips

Jakarta

Don’t be tempted by cheap car prices, instead of getting the item you dream of, it will result in losses. Prices that are much lower on the market are one of the used car triangle fraud methods.

Sundoro, CEO of Inspector Mobil, told the chronology of what happened to his customer, let’s call him Mr. Sis, who was interested in buying the 2021 Toyota Alphard. Then Tito was called a fraudster, and Rio was the original seller. This incident occurred in Surabaya, East Java.

Tito pretended that he was going to buy Rio’s car. Then, without the car seller’s knowledge, the fraudster advertises the car on the marketplace at a lower price.

Next, Tito uploaded photos of the Toyota Alphard on marketplace for IDR 910 million. Even though Rio sold the car for IDR 975 million.

There is a difference of IDR 65 million. Fraudsters deliberately set prices far below the market so that potential victims are deceived. Luckily this fraud was thwarted.

If you look at the used car market, Alphard prices in the 2020-2021 range, some of which are still above IDR 1 billion. For example, for 2020, those sold at WTC Mangga Dua are priced starting at IDR 1,080 billion. Meanwhile, in classified ads in other marketplaces, the 2021 Alphard is selling for IDR 986 million to IDR 1.1 billion, provided that the mileage is still low at under 20 thousand km.

It is worth paying attention to the indications of triangle fraud. Usually fraudsters generally ask buyers not to discuss prices with people at the car unit location. Furthermore, price matters are only discussed between prospective buyers and fraudsters.

Generally, the triangle mode in used car sales occurs, the perpetrator will trick and ask the victim to transfer directly to their account, after the transfer the perpetrator will run away and cannot be contacted by the victim.

Here’s how to avoid the triangle fraud mode in used car transactions.

  • Prospective buyers or sellers of used cars should first seek information regarding the market price and specifications of used vehicles before buying.
  • Don’t be easily tempted if there are used cars being sold at cheap prices and far below the market price, and don’t easily trust people you don’t know to make transactions.
  • If you want to buy a car online, it is best before making a down payment and checking the car, the prospective buyer asks the seller to make a video call and asks for proof that the vehicle and its documents are with the seller.
  • Before transferring or making a payment, it is better for prospective buyers to ask for proof of identity or original KTP from the seller to avoid fraud such as differences between the name on the account number used and the seller’s original KTP.
