FACEBOOK users are being banned from their accounts for not responding to a message that some have mistaken for spam.
People who realized that the warning is real tried to follow the instructions of the social network, but apparently a problem prevents them from regaining access.
A notice was sent to selected accounts deemed at particular risk from hackers, telling them to enable an enhanced security feature called Facebook Protect.
Many were given a March 17 deadline to set it up themselves or face having their account locked until it’s ready.
It’s possible that someone thought the message was a scam, so they ignored it.
The unusual email address used, [email protected]probably didn’t help at all.
After the deadline passed, users were told they had to turn on Facebook Protect to get in.
However, those who followed through claim that the setup system is broken, meaning they are still locked out.
Apparently authentication tools, like a text message to prove it’s you, don’t work.
“I got banned from Facebook indefinitely today because I didn’t respond to FB emails (which seemed like a scam) about their new Facebook Protect system, which I had to enable today,” said one user. said.
“So far, the text and security key options are not working, according to many reports.”
Another complained at Twittersaying, “This Facebook Protect thing is so annoying because it won’t let me turn it on and I need Facebook to work so I really hope Facebook fixes the stupid code.”
Facebook Protect is a special monitoring program for people at higher risk of being attacked by hackers.
This includes those working on human rights, journalists and government officials.
Facebook owner Meta has been contacted by The Sun for comment.
