[안동=뉴시스] Reporter Ryu Sang-hyeon = Damage from virus infection has been found to have spread significantly on fruits and vegetables in open fields and facilities in Gyeongbuk Province due to the rise in temperature due to abnormal climate.

According to the Gyeongbuk Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services on the 16th, tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), cucurbit yellow yellow virus (CCYV), and cucurbit aphid-borne virus were detected in fruit and vegetable cultivation areas in the province, including tomatoes, melons, cucumbers, melons, and peppers, from June to September. (CABYV) and Tomato Spotted Wisdom Virus (TSWV, also known as collar disease) damage occurred.

The most common occurrence was tomato yellow leaf curl virus, which occurred in 85% of the facilities and packaging facilities of the farms surveyed, and the average occurrence rate was about 10%, which was higher than the previous year (2-3%).

The virus that causes yellowing symptoms in melons, cucumbers, and melons occurred in 31% of the farms surveyed, with an incidence rate of about 1-3%, and the occurrence of collar disease in field peppers was also observed in 69% of the farms surveyed. The liquor rate was around 1-5%.

When tomatoes are infected with yellow leaf curl virus, the leaves turn yellow, shoot growth is poor, and fruit productivity drops significantly.

If cucurbit crops are infected with a virus that causes yellowing damage in the early stages of growth, the sugar content drops by 20-40% and fruit enlargement and net formation are poor, making it a non-commodity fruit.

In field-grown peppers, it has recently been discovered that plants are partially withered and died due to collar disease infection in resistant varieties.

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus and cucurbit crop yellowing virus are transmitted by tobacco whiteflies, collar disease, which causes increased damage to peppers, is transmitted by thrips, and cucurbit crop aphid-borne viruses are transmitted by aphids.

Pests that transmit such viruses must be blocked by installing insect screens from the seedling stage and the beginning of growth.

In order to block the inflow of pests into the facility, install cold wire with a hole size of 0.8 mm or less at the entrance or side to prevent the inflow of external pests. If pests have already occurred, thoroughly spray registered chemicals according to the safety use guidelines. must be prevented.

Symptoms of yellowing damage caused by viral infection can be confusing as they are similar to trace element deficiencies or menstrual disorders, so when symptoms suspected of a virus are discovered, you should contact the local city/county agricultural technology center or the Agricultural Research and Extension Services in the early stages of the outbreak to receive an accurate diagnosis and respond accordingly.

Cho Young-sook, director of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services, said, “We will actively guide farmers to prevent pests outside the facility when growing fruits and vegetables and thoroughly control pests and diseases from the seedling stage, and we will minimize damage to crops.”
