On the last day of the year, Florida air caused a temperature fireworks display in Switzerland: In the mountains and the Jura, partly also in the plains, the temperatures on New Year’s Eve were higher than ever since the start of measurements.
At least 34 stations of the state weather service Meteoschweiz there were temperature records, as SRF Meteo announced. These stations are primarily located on peaks at altitudes between 1100 and 2500 meters on both sides of the Alps.
But also places in the Jura would have experienced the warmest New Year’s Eve, in a few cases even stations in the Swiss Plateau made it, according to Aadorf in the canton of Thurgau. In the extreme case, the old New Year’s Eve records were exceeded by more than seven degrees.
In Adelboden BE, for example, 17.2 degrees were measured, the old record dated New Year’s Eve 2006 with 9.8 degrees, as SRF Meteo continues to write. In San Bernardino, in the upper Misox, the old record was exceeded by around 4.5 degrees.
The situation was sometimes so extreme that even the absolute December highs shook. On the Cimetta above Locarno at 1660 meters above sea level, 15.5 degrees were measured. Up until now in December it had been so warm there, namely on December 12, 1994 with 16.4 degrees warmer. The 17.2 degrees in Adelboden were the third highest local December value. It was even warmer there on December 16, 1989 with 18.5 degrees and on December 4, 1985 with 17.3 degrees. According to the weather service, temperatures were also measured in many other places that were below the ten highest December temperatures of the respective places.
Already a record Thursday
On Thursday there had already been the highest lowest temperatures to date for December. In Güttingen TG, for example, the thermometer did not drop below 11.2 degrees within a day. That is the highest value in 28 years. In Koppigen BE, with a low of 9.3 degrees, it was as warm as it had not been for 60 years, as Meteoschweiz announced on Twitter.
In Wynau BE, a temperature record of 9.5 degrees was also recorded. In Salen-Reutenen TG the thermometer did not fall below 9.5 degrees. The old record here dates from December 17, 2019.
Buchs AG also recorded record values with 10.6 degrees and Zurich-Kloten with 10.3 degrees. Here the two previous record values of December 20, 1993 were equalized.
Florida air provides warmth
The air parcels, which are currently almost 6000 meters above the Alps, were still in Florida over Christmas, as SRF Meteo continues to write. On the south side of the extensive low pressure system over the Atlantic, they were transported south past the Azores almost to the Canary Islands, and from there to the northeast over the Iberian Peninsula to Switzerland.
