More than 300 Russian officers were killed during the Ukraine war. It shows an analysis conducted by the independent Russian website Mediazone.
Mediazona says they have investigated hundreds of public statements, news articles and messages, and posts on social media.
To toppgeneraler
The website has found information about 1744 Russian soldiers killed and 317 officers, including two top generals and deputy commander of the Black Sea Fleet, Andrei Palij (51).
The latest official Russian figures, from the end of March, showed 1351 soldiers killed and 3825 wounded.
The number of officers killed is high in relation to the total number of soldiers killed. This is explained by the analysts and the officers like to act physically in the field. In addition, the authorities strive to transport the bodies home and report the deaths afterwards.
Dagestan hard hit
Proportionately, it is the Caucasus Republic of Dagestan that has suffered the most losses; 125 of the killed soldiers come from there. The Siberian Republic of Burjatija has 85 registered deaths, and the Volgograd region has 66.
Only two of Russia’s 85 regions lack reported deaths.
Excluded from the analysis are Russian-backed separatists.
The figures are low compared to western estimates. The British Secretary of Defense, Ben Wallace, estimated on Monday that 15,000 Russian soldiers had been killed during the war. Ukraine claims that over 20,000 Russians have been killed.
