CONTEXT
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops. Putin claimed that NATO was going to use Ukraine as a springboard for aggression against Russia, although there was no evidence for these claims. Ukraine believes that Putin’s real goal is to destroy Ukraine’s statehood and bring the territory under Moscow’s control.
At the beginning of autumn, the Ukrainian counter-offensive liberated more territory from the occupiers than Russia had managed to occupy since the beginning of April. In mid-October, Ukrainian forces managed to approach the city of Kherson, which the occupying authorities decided to leave.
On October 10, Russia carried out massive missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, shelling civilian infrastructure facilities and urban residential areas. Efforts to destroy Ukraine’s energy supply infrastructure continued even after that.
