In an interview with 60 Minutes, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken states that US authorities warned Russia against the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
– It is very important that Moscow hears us and knows that there would be catastrophic consequences on our part. We made it clear and obvious, Blinken says in the interview, second CBS.
– Any use of nuclear weapons will have catastrophic consequences for the country that uses them, of course, but also for many others, says the foreign minister.
According to security adviser Jake Sullivan, the White House had a direct dialogue with the Kremlin at a high level, and here they were pretty clear on the same:
– Any use of nuclear weapons has catastrophic consequences for Russia. The United States and our allies will respond strongly and we have been very clear and specific about what this entails, Sullivan added. CBS.
Vladimir Putin called in 300,000 new troops and said he was ready to use all means to defend the territories, including nuclear weapons.
This has spread fears that it may use so-called tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
Blinken states in the 60 Minutes interview that he believes that “Russia is in this mess because there is no one in the system who is actually telling Putin that he is doing the wrong thing.”

Blinken describes Putin’s rhetoric as “irresponsible” and says the US has expressed concern to Russia over the threats.
– We focus on making sure we all act responsibly, especially when it comes to this kind of free rhetoric, says Blinken in the interview.
When asked if the United States has a plan to prevent a possible Third World War, Blinken replies:
– President Biden is determined to do everything possible to help Ukraine defend itself and we are doing everything possible to get other countries to put pressure on Russia. We are also firmly determined that this war should not expand or encompass more areas.
