War in Ukraine: Jamala, originally from Crimea and Ukrainian Eurovision winner, indicted in Russia

Ukrainian singer Jamala, winner of the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest, has been indicted in Russia, accused of spreading false information about the Russian military in a video shared in April in which she spoke about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian Prosecutor’s Office said Jamala would be arrested if she sets foot in Russia. Russian media reported last week that the Ukrainian singer had been placed on Russia’s wanted list. Jamala is of Crimean Tatar origin and has for years been leading a campaign in favor of this minority in Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014. In 2016, the singer won the Eurovision song contest with the composition “1944“, which refers to the deportation of around 200,000 Crimean Tatars by Stalin to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in particular.
