War in Ukraine – it became known how Ukrainian prisoners of war are treated in Russia

“The Russian Federation grossly violates the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War. These facts were confirmed during the last release of Ukrainian citizens from enemy captivity,” the Ombudswoman wrote.

She added that the Ukrainian military spoke about the inhumane treatment they received from the Russian side. The invaders kept the Ukrainians in the field, in the pit, in the garage. They were periodically taken out one at a time: beaten with gun butts, shot at the ear and intimidated.

Border guards from Zmeiny Island were taken in tow to Sevastopol. Russian propagandists began to use them, talking about the “humanity” of the Russian authorities, who allegedly organized the return of prisoners home.

One group of Ukrainian prisoners of war was taken to an unknown direction and settled in a tent at minus 20 degrees. As a result, many of them received frostbite of the limbs. In addition, the Russian invaders treated them like prisoners: they exerted moral pressure, and during walks in the yard they let the dog go.

“Such actions on the part of Russia are a violation of Article 13 of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War, which notes the humane treatment of prisoners of war,” Denisova stressed.

The Ombudswoman called on the UN Commission to Investigate Human Rights Violations During Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine and other international human rights organizations to take into account these violations of the rights of Ukrainian prisoners of war.
