A side effect of the military invasion of the Russian Federation is a food disaster, which threatens, first of all, Africa.

The sharp rise in world food prices as a result of the war in Ukraine could provoke food riots in poor countries. This was stated by the head of the World Trade Organization Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in an interview The Guardian.

She warned food-producing countries against stockpiling and said it was critical to avoid a repeat of the coronavirus pandemic, when rich countries were able to secure most of their vaccines.

The head of the WTO expressed concern about the side effects of the Russian invasion, highlighting the dependence of 35 African countries on food supplies from the Black Sea region.

She stressed that Russia and Ukraine account for 24% of world wheat supplies. At the same time, the Ukrainian sowing campaign is in jeopardy, and the supply of fertilizers is limited.

“If we don’t think about how to mitigate the consequences of the war, it will be another catastrophe not only this year but also next year,” Okonjo-Iweala said.

She added that there is a risk of a repeat of the food riots that occurred during the period of rapid price increases in the late 2000s.

As a reminder, a group of countries, including the US, UK, Canada and 27 EU states, deprived Russia of the status most favored nation in trade.
