More and more cultural institutions are showing solidarity with Ukraine with charity events.
The world looks at the war in Ukraine with great sympathy and dismay. Around the world, people are demonstrating against Russia’s invasion of its neighboring country. At the same time, the cultural scene shows its solidarity with Ukraine and reacts with program changes and benefit concerts. The network Weltoffenes Dresden (#WOD) is organizing a benefit concert on Sunday, March 6th at 11 a.m. in the theater of the Staatsschauspiel Dresden. The proceeds go to the aid organization arche noVa – Initiative for People in Need eV The “Concert for Peace” was organized within a few days by the Ukrainian musician Viktoria Leléka and a large number of Ukrainian musicians. In addition to works by Ukrainian composers, the program also includes folk songs, world music and jazz. The Hamburger Schauspielhaus, in cooperation with the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT, is also taking a stand against the war on Monday, March 7, with #StandWithUkraine. The program includes a conversation between Alice Bota (Eastern Europe expert and ZEIT editor), Sabine Fischer (German Institute for International Politics and Security), the Ukrainian author Yuri Andruchowytsch and the Belarusian writer Viktor Martinowitsch, whose novel “Revolution” will be published in May premiered at the Schauspielhaus. Music by jazz saxophonist Vlatko Kucan and percussionist Mark Nauseef will also be heard, and ensemble actors will read texts by Yuri Andrukhovych, Katja Petrovskaya, Serhij Zhadan, Marina Weisband and Viktor Martinowitsch, among others. On Tuesday, March 8, Anne-Sophie Mutter and members of the Munich Philharmonic, the BR Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian State Orchestra will play works by Beethoven at a joint benefit concert in the Isar Philharmonic Hall in Munich. The state of Hesse is also taking a stand against the invasion of the Ukraine and for peace with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, which is hosting a benefit concert at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt on Thursday, March 10 at 8 p.m. The proceeds from the event go to the Ukraine emergency aid of the “Development Helps” alliance. In Berlin, the Konzerthausorchester and its chief conductor Christoph Eschenbach have announced a solidarity concert for Ukrainian children and families for Thursday, March 17 at 6:30 p.m., featuring works by Dmitri Shostakovich.
