War in Donbass – Czech repented of killing Ukrainians

Czech citizen Pavel Kafka, who was sentenced to three years in prison for participating in hostilities in Donbass on the side of the invaders, wrote a letter to the Ukrainian embassy, in which he pleaded guilty. In the letter, he also apologized to Ukraine for his actions.

Kafka sent the corresponding letter to the Ukrainian Embassy in the Czech Republic. It is reported by Media initiative for human rights… And the letter itself was read by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Yevgeny Perebiynis during online conferencesconducted by this non-governmental organization.

In his statement, Kafka admitted that he really fought on the side of the Russian invaders and did not think about the consequences of his illegal actions. He also stated that he did not take part in any military operations. However, the court proved otherwise last year, when it announced the verdict on Kafka.

According to Perebiynos, it is not known what exactly prompted Kafka to write this letter. These could be purely mercantile interests and expectations that in this way he would be able to somehow reduce the term of imprisonment.

“But the fact remains: a person is serving a sentence and, at least in words, regrets what he did against Ukraine,” the ambassador said.

The investigation proved that Pavel Kafka in 2015 – 2016 took part in hostilities as part of the terrorist “DPR”. According to the prosecution, Kafka received special training in a tank unit, and then served as a gunner and driver.

In July 2020, the Regional Court of Ceske Budejovice sentenced the Czech for terrorism and “participation in an organized criminal group” to three years of probation, suspended for five years.

After that, the prosecution and the convicted person himself filed appeals. However, this did not help Kafka: on December 5, 2020, the Prague Supreme Court changed the sentence from conditional to real and sentenced him to three years in prison.

According to the ambassador, in total, more than 20 citizens of this country were tried or are on trial in the Czech Republic for involvement in the hostilities in the Donbass. In these cases, approximately six sentences were passed, of which two are real.
