According to the newspaper, Siddiqi and a senior Afghan security officer were killed on July 16. They were caught in crossfire during a battle between government forces and the Taliban over the Spin-Boldak border crossing.
“We are urgently requesting additional information and are working with authorities in the region,” said Reuters President Michael Friedenberg and Editor-in-Chief Alessandre Galloni.
Danish Siddiqi has been working in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan since the beginning of this week as part of the Afghan security forces. The journalist covered their work.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said he was “deeply saddened by the shocking reports” of Siddiqi’s death and expressed condolences to his family.
