Kurilla’s visit to the region, where he has been since Saturday, was planned before the latest developments that fueled threats of war, but is now expected to bring together the same coalition of forces that helped stop Iran’s direct attacks on Israel, according to its US Official.
The official said that Kurilla will visit several Gulf countries, as well as Jordan and Israel. In particular, the US is asking Jordan to allow US and Israeli jets to enter its airspace to intercept incoming Iranian drones.
However, the report said Washington fears that similar cooperation from regional countries will be more difficult amid anti-Israel sentiment over Haniyeh’s murder.
US officials believe Iran’s response will be similar to the April attack, but could be larger and also include fire from Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
Axios noted that US and Israeli officials said they did not know whether Hezbollah would join the Iranian attack or retaliate in a separate attack. Officials said Iran and Hezbollah had not prepared to complete their attack or received final approval at the political level.
The Pentagon and CENTCOM did not comment on the Axios report.
On Friday, the US said it would send more aircraft and warships to the region to counter an Iranian attack.
A US official told Axios that Washington hopes the announcement will help deter Iran and Hezbollah and force them to change their attack plans as a result.
In its report, Ynet quoted an unnamed Israeli security official as saying that the US intervention and the defense coalition it is trying to build has had a real impact on Iran and its plans they put together.
