Want PTM in Schools Free from Covid-19, Study Explains the 3 Conditions

JawaPos.com – Face-to-face learning (PTM) is now starting to be implemented again. The opening of this school raises concerns about the safety of students due to the discovery of clusters of Covid-19 transmission in schools. Can schools really spread Covid-19?

Researchers have previously reported that poorly ventilated classrooms are a source of rapid virus spread, so proper ventilation and air quality measurement are necessary as a preventive measure. Studies have also demonstrated the importance of air quality management to ensure a safer learning environment for students.

The world’s leading air quality researcher and author of The Lancet Report on Airborne Transmission of SARS CoV-2 and the report Exhaled CO2 as a Covid-19 Infection Risk Proxy, Professor Jose-Luis Jimenez, explains that various studies show the important role of layered risk mitigation, otherwise known as the term Swiss Cheese Model, in reducing the risk of transmitting Covid-19 significantly in various schools around the world. Indoor air quality management including measurement of CO2 levels, air ventilation, and air filtration are key components in reducing the risk of transmission, thereby increasing the safety of our children attending school face to face in the midst of the new normal period.

The Swiss Cheese Model approach emphasizes that there is no single solution that can effectively combat the transmission of the virus that attacks a person’s respiratory tract. For that, a multi-layered mitigation strategy is needed. In the Swiss Cheese model, ventilation and air filtration are key to mitigating the risk of virus transmission.

“Classroom management is combined with individual prevention efforts such as wearing masks and washing hands,” he said in a written statement on the Nafas platform, AirTest monitor and Pure40 Purifier aria, Sunday (26/9).

Professor of the Faculty of Public Health, University of Indonesia and Fellow of Occupational and Environmental Health at Collegium Ramazzini, Italy, Prof. Budi Haryanto,
Explaining the opening of schools is an important step that must be done in the end. This is a consideration to see the potential impact of learning from home on children’s cognitive and psychological development in the long term.

“On the other hand, we must also ensure a safe learning environment, especially with the nature of the Covid-19 virus which can be transmitted through the air (airborne). This is where the crucial role of air quality management strategies in ensuring the safety of our children when studying in their classrooms, “said Prof. Budi.

There are three strategies to do. Anything?

1. Measure CO2 Levels

Watch measurements of CO2 and PM2.5 levels in real time in the classroom.
