Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a telephone conversation with his Canadian counterpart Mélanie Joly.
At the call, Wang said China continues to view and treat Sino-Canada relations from a strategic and long-term height.
Wang Yi also presented a three-point proposal on bilateral relations: First, Canada should view China objectively and positively, and pursue a level-headed and pragmatic China policy. Secondly, both countries should respect each other’s core interests and not create new barricades for bilateral relations. Third, Canada should maintain its independence and self-sufficiency and eliminate unnecessary foreign interference.
Joly replied that Canada respects China’s sovereignty and the system of the state, as well as the decisions made by the Chinese people independently. Canada commends the tremendous achievements in China’s development, especially in the area of poor relief. Canada intends to gradually bring bilateral relations back on the normal development path and build on consolidated bilateral ties.
Both sides also discussed the Ukraine issue.
