Wang Yilyu/Huang Dongping won gold medal in mixed doubles badminton Tokyo Olympics 2020 after defeating the first seed Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong in the final at Musashino Forest Plaza, Tokyo, Friday (30/7).
The All China Final took place in the mixed doubles final. The duel was fierce and Wang/Huang, who is the second seed, had to go through 69 minutes of the match to beat Zheng/Huang.
The first game is called Wang/Huang 21-17. However, Zheng/Huang, who beat Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva in the quarter-finals, were able to get up and take the lead 21-17.
In the game of determining the match went tough. Wang/Huang were able to play more calmly at critical moments. The second seed then won 21-19 in the final game and became the first gold medalist in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics badminton.
For Wang/Huang and Zheng/Huang, the Tokyo Olympics is the first Olympics for both pairs. Having a pair of world number 1 and 2, China is already predicted to win the mixed doubles gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, the mixed doubles gold medal was won by the Indonesian pair Tontowi Ahmad / Liliyana Natsir.
Meanwhile, the bronze medal went to Japanese mixed doubles Yuta Watanabe/Arisa Higashino, who in the third place match defeated Hong Kong doubles Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet 21-17 and 23-21.

For Watanabe, the 24-year-old badminton player became the first male badminton athlete in Japanese history to win a medal at the Olympics.
“I hope I’m not the last. There will be more men’s badminton in the future [yang merebut medali Olimpiade], but being the first is definitely a great honour. It means a lot to the history of Japanese badminton,” Watanabe was quoted as saying on the BWF’s official website.
