Irapuato, Guanajuato. – Walter McCarty, who “shined” at the University of Kentucky and had an “outstanding” career in the National Basketball Association (NBA), has become the new coach of the Freseros de Irapuato.
Today, McCarty already trained with the team, and expectations are high, it is expected that tomorrow he will make his debut in the National Professional Basketball League, as a coach in an official match, with the “hope” of obtaining his first victory for the strawberry team.
“I come here to win, I come to bring out the best in you,” were the words of Walter McCarty, new coach of the Freseros de Irapuato.
McCarty, who was part of the Kentucky team that won the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship in 1996, sharing a locker room with Derek Anderson, Tony Delk, Antoine Walker and Ron Mercer, future NBA players, brings with him a rich experience in the world of basketball.
The new coach’s NBA career began in 1996 when he was selected by the New York Knicks in the 19th position of the Draft, during his rookie season where he played 35 games.
However, his time with the Knicks was brief, since on October 22, 1997, he was traded to the Boston Celtics along with Dontae’ Jones, John Thomas, Scott Brooks and two future second round draft picks to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Chris Mills.
The American has vast experience in the NBA, having played ten seasons there and also playing the role of assistant coach for six years with the Boston Celtics. His experience and knowledge of the game have prepared him for this new chapter as coach of the Freseros de Irapuato.
