Walter Grootaers, the iconic frontman of de Kreuners, has shared an update on his health and potential return to the stage. Speaking on Radio 2, the 70-year-old singer revealed that while his voice is improving, a full comeback wiht the band is unlikely before 2026.
Grootaers, who was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2023, has been on a challenging journey to recovery. Although he is now cancer-free, the treatment took a toll on his vocal cords, leaving him unable to perform at full capacity. “My voice is always doing better,” he said during the program Oh la la. “Singing a few songs is already accomplished. but I don’t think I’m ready to stand on a stage for 1.5 hours or 2 hours. I have to keep training.”

Fans of the band, known for hits like A-rum-a-dum-dum, will have to wait a little longer to see grootaers back in action. The singer emphasized that patience is key, both for himself and his supporters. “It is not for this summer, or for the next one. Or within 40 years,” he joked, referencing his earlier comments about his comeback timeline.
Despite the setbacks, Grootaers remains optimistic. He plans to meet with his bandmates this year to assess the feasibility of returning to the stage, though he acknowledges it may not happen soon. “Walter, jij beslist. Is het 2026, dan is het 2026,” he said, echoing the sentiment that the decision lies entirely with him.
