Walmart presents ‘Imperfect but Good’, an initiative against food waste

“Imperfect but Good” is the new program launched by Walmart in Mexico and Central America to reduce food waste. This by offering customers a variety of fruits and vegetables that are different in appearance, but that are suitable for sale and consumption and are equally delicious and nutritious as the others.

The company continues with its purpose so that Guatemalan families can save money, time and live better, without sacrificing the quality of the products. With this initiative, Walmart reaffirms its commitment to being a more sustainable and regenerative company to conserve the planet and the communities where it operates.

Every year, about 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted in the world. A good part of that healthy and nutritious food is wasted because it does not meet normalized aesthetic standards. Added to the above, 22% of global food production ends up in the trash.

Flavio Cotini, General Director of Walmart Mexico and Central America, explained that the company launches this initiative in support of Sustainable Development Goal number 12 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which promotes responsible production and consumption to reduce waste by 50%. food.

“Central American families can enjoy fruits and vegetables that, perhaps due to their shape or color, are considered imperfect, but that maintain their properties, flavor and quality, at a preferential price. They are foods that are perfectly edible and suitable for consumption.”Cotini highlighted.

Objective of ‘Imperfect but Good’

The objective of the “Imperfect but Good” campaign is to take advantage of these fruits and vegetables that nature offers us. Discarding them means wasting the product, as well as all the efforts and resources used to produce them.

Additionally, this initiative benefits agricultural suppliers with a 16% increase in the purchase of their harvest.

“We encourage customers to be part of the campaign and visit the shelves that will be in the fruit and vegetable area. This is so that they can choose their highest quality food and contribute to reducing waste.”Cotini pointed out.

The campaign is already present in Walmart Próceres, Walmart Mixco, Walmart Norte, Walmart Puerta Parada and Walmart Roosevelt, as well as in 13 other stores in Central America. It is projected that by the end of the year, customers will be able to find these foods in any of the 10 Walmart stores in Guatemala, as well as in all of its 36 Walmart stores in the region.
