(Belga) The association of Walloon PCSWs is again arguing on Friday for a mandatory vaccination of staff in the elderly care. In December, the PCSWs already launched a similar appeal.
Mandatory vaccination of healthcare personnel is common throughout Belgium, but the need is even more acute in Wallonia, according to the PCSWs. Only 73.3 percent of healthcare staff is vaccinated, far below the European figure of 80 percent. In residential care centers the vaccination rate is even lower. Now that all adults have had the chance to get vaccinated, it is unlikely that the percentage will increase without a commitment. “A healthcare professional is someone who takes care of,” the OCMWs said on Friday. “Taking care and at the same time exposing someone to a danger is a contradiction. The freedom of choice regarding vaccination is not compatible with quality care.” The PCSWs ask that an obligation be introduced before the autumn. Otherwise, they say we risk a fourth wave.
