The European member states must submit an updated version of their energy and climate plans for the period from 2021 to 2030, including how they want to reduce CO2 emissions. Europe aims for a 55 percent reduction in emissions. For Belgium this amounts to a decrease of 47 percent. Flanders does not want to go further than a decrease of 40 percent. Wallonia has now agreed to the Belgian plan.
The file will be on the table of the Consultation Committee again next week. “It has not yet arrived, I will not hide that,” Walloon Climate Minister Philippe Henry said on Thursday. “We are not going to adjust Flanders’ deficit, but there is room for negotiation. We will see whether it is possible to reach an agreement in the Consultation Committee. If that doesn’t work, everything will be postponed for a year.”
