Capital of the historic region of Alsace and capital of the Grand Est region, Strasbourg is bordered by the Rhine and borders Germany. Its city center, located on the Big Island, is fully listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It notably includes the Notre-Dame de Strasbourg cathedral and the Petite France district. Formerly nicknamed the “city of a thousand churches”, Strasbourg is today the seat of many institutions such as the European Parliament or the European Court of Human Rights. A major student city, its university has hosted 18 Nobel Prize winners within its walls. At number 81 Grand Rue is the house where Rouget de Lisle composed the Marseillaise in 1792.
