On Twitter, the rapper with many hits and whose latest album The Cookbook dates back to 2005 said “grateful” for this initiative, proposed by Erin Carter, Senate counsel. “We don’t do a good job of honoring our own heroes. It was growing up that I learned that Missy Elliott, who received all these awards and played in the White House, grew up right here in our town of Portsmouth”she declared before the city council on Tuesday.

“Kids shouldn’t have to look for greatness in other cities, because greatness already resides in Portsmouth”, Carter continued. A speech that earned him praise from the rapper: “Thank you, Erin Carter, for starting the project to name a street in my name in my hometown”said Missy Elliott on Instagram. “I have been blessed to receive several awards in my career, but this honor resonates differently because it comes from home.”

The future Missy Elliott Boulevard will be near a shopping area, a university and a casino. A choice not linked to the artist’s significant places, to avoid changes of address for the inhabitants of the locality.
