The info point on the Kandel was opened today, Friday, and now offers visitors to the summit lots of information about nature and the surrounding area, as well as toilets, changing rooms and deposits.

The district of Emmendingen, together with the four neighboring municipalities of Waldkirch, Simonswald, St. Peter and Glottertal, had long ago planned a building with an information center to improve its 1242 meter high local mountain. now made and officially opened today. District administrator Hanno Hurth inaugurated the completed Infopoint on the Kandel under a light snowfall in the presence of invited guests. It is an information center with interesting facts about the various facets of Kandelbergland such as nature and landscape, energy production, but also tourism opportunities. There are also public toilets and changing rooms in the Infopoint building, as well as shelter for hikers or winter sports enthusiasts if they have to wait for the bus in the rain, snow or wind. “Today, with the inauguration of the Infopoint Kandel, we are at the end of a multi-year marathon and can now present the entire project to the public with a certain pride”, Hanno Hurth explained in his speech. In the design of the multifunctional building, a total cost of 500,000 euros was assumed. While not all costs have been paid, there is good prospect that this budget can be met.

About the “Mountain of Powers”:
The heart of the interior of the 13-metre-long and almost eight-metre-wide building is information in three languages ​​about the Kandel as the “mountain of power”. The scientific concept for this was created by the Institute for Environmental Social Sciences and Geography – Heritage Interpretation working group – at the University of Freiburg. He was also responsible for the Kandel stele project with 52 three-sided information pillars distributed throughout the Kandel area.
At the Infopoint, Kandel visitors learn many interesting facts about geology, plants and animals, history, curiosities and about environmental, nature and landscape protection in Kandelbergland with graphic elements. Visitors should be aware of Kandel peak’s special habitat for nature. The Kandel has no shortage of particularities in this respect: the Kandel plateau and parts of the Kandel forest are FFH and bird protection areas as well as landscape protection areas, on the top of the Kandel there are numerous biotopes and the raised moor as a monument natural .

A mountain for every season:
At 1,242 metres, the Kandel is the highest elevation and local mountain in the Emmendingen district, visible from almost everywhere. As the most important tourist spot in the Black Forest nature region, it is popular all year round: by hikers, cyclists and mountain bikers, hang gliders and paragliders, in winter by families for tobogganing, with lovers snow for cross-country skiing, alpine skiing or snowboarding. In summer, many hikers appreciate the fresh air and beautiful sunsets, and in autumn the Kandel offers plenty of sun on gray foggy days in the valley and a view of the valleys in the sea of ​​fog in the Emmendingen district.

Planning by the district office:
The owner of the new info point is the district of Emmendingen, the planning was the responsibility of the district office: architect Patricia Haas from the Office for Construction and Real Estate drew up the plans and plans for the building, and his colleague Lars Dohrmann took over the construction management. The construction companies involved in the foundation and construction of the building have not had to travel too far to the construction site in recent months, as they come from the Elz and Simonswald valleys. The interior of the information center was designed by the University of Freiburg – Institute for Environmental Social Sciences and Geography.
