The idea was born seven years ago. Waldemar Torenstra traveled through Africa with his family: wife Sophie Hilbrand, and daughter and son of 3,5 and 1 year old. “I was so impressed with everything we came across. This was such a different picture of Africa than I had always envisioned. Even then I thought: there is a documentary in here. ”
If you think of Africa, smiles Torenstra (46), ‘you see such a picture with wild nature, a setting sun and a silhouette of, let’s say, a cheetah. Of course, that is also Africa, but there is much more. That’s what I wanted to tell and show: a different Africa. ”
Torenstra had to ‘really peddle with his idea’, but was still able to hit the road at the end of 2019, accompanied by a sound engineer and cameraman. Mode of transport: the motorcycle. “We thought you would get closer to the people faster, you would be entitled to it sooner. It was, although local people thought we were crazy. Our heavy duty bikes weren’t made for those deep dirt roads. That much freight traffic was also very link. But there was also something adventurous about it. ”
